When the “I Have a Scream” speech was delivered by Howard Dean in the 2004 elections, it was three years into George Bush’s Iraq War and three seasons into Tom Brady’s rein as New England’s quarterback.
As John Kerry failed in his attempt to decry Bush’s “crony capitalism” and “dollarocracy” to offer an alternative, the dubiously self-titled “Best F#@king News Team Ever” was on-point from the early primaries all the way to the general election.
The cast of “correspondents” still included rising stars Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert, and their satirical efforts netted “Indecision” a Webby Award and other accolades, including a Peabody. It had “more real news in the so-called fake news,” than in the “so-called real news.”
It was a high water mark for Jon Stewart’s version of “The Daily Show,” and for cable TV in general, as the format began entering its twilight prior to the omnipresence of social networking and market proliferation of the iPhone.
